Shooting at Wayne State – Detroit, Michigan — Wayne State University officials confirmed a shooting incident late Tuesday night at the Chatsworth Suites residence hall on campus, triggering a shelter-in-place order for students and staff. The order, issued shortly before 10 p.m. on January 27, was lifted early Wednesday after authorities secured the scene and determined there was no ongoing threat to the wider community.
University and city police say the incident began as a dispute between individuals who knew each other, during which a shot was fired inside the dormitory. All people believed to be involved left the building before police arrived, and officers subsequently recovered a firearm from the scene. Investigators are still working to determine whether anyone was struck or injured by gunfire.
Authorities implemented the shelter-in-place as a safety precaution while officers searched the area and conducted interviews with witnesses. Campus safety officials emphasized there was no evidence of a random attack and that the situation appears to have stemmed from a personal dispute rather than a threat to the broader student population.
The Chatsworth Suites dormitory is located near 3rd Avenue and Warren Avenue in Midtown Detroit, and police continued their investigation into the early-evening incident into the early hours of Wednesday. Campus operations and normal activities resumed after the shelter-in-place was lifted around midnight.
Wayne State University administration urged students and community members to remain vigilant and report any additional information to law enforcement as they compile full details of the event.
